What is a DSG Gearbox (Direct Shift Gearbox)?

DSG gearboxes are semi-automated systems that utilise two separate manual gearboxes and clutches that are electronically controlled. A DSG gearbox can achieve a faster and smoother gearshift that eliminates the requirement of a torque converter present in most automatic gearbox systems.

What Companies use DSG Gearboxes? 

The Direct Shift Gearbox is widely used in VW, Audi, SEAT, and Skodas. Other manufacturers also offer DSG-style transmissions but many of them use a different name. BMW uses them in a few models, generally, it is used in high-performance cars, they’re known as DCT. Porsche uses the PDK acronym and in Ford cars, they’re known as Powershift gearboxes.

Whilst most cars come with one clutch, the second clutch works by figuring out which gear you’re likely to need next and getting it ready. In theory, this means the gearbox is always prepared for your next move, meaning the gear shifts are noticeably smoother and quicker, even though it’s unlikely for you to notice much difference between a DSG and a conventional automatic gearbox from behind the wheel. This is why it’s one of the key reasons they’re also favoured in performance cars from manufacturers such as Mercedes, BMW and Porsche.
